A convex lens is an optical element that has a convex shape with a thick center and a thin edge. Its working principle is based on the refraction phenomenon and the shape of the lens.

When a convex lens encounters light, it refracts the light.Refraction is the change in the direction of light as it passes from one medium to another. The convex surface of the convex lens bends the light on the surface of the lens, thus changing the direction of the light's propagation.

The working principle of convex lenses can be explained by the following steps:

Refraction:When light from a medium (such as air) is shot into the convex surface of the convex lens, due to the different refractive index of the medium, the light will be refracted when entering the lens.Refraction causes the direction of light to be deflected.

Focusing action:Because the convex surface of a convex lens bends the light toward the center of the lens,it can focus parallel rays of light into focus. The focal point is the point at which light rays converge, usually on the opposite side of the convex surface of a convex lens.

Light deflection:In addition to the focusing effect, convex lenses also deflect light inside the lens. This is because when light rays are refracted at the interface from one medium to another, their speed and direction of propagation change.

Specifically, the central part of the convex lens is thicker and gradually thinner toward the edge. This shape causes light at the center of the lens to refract differently than light at the edges, causing light to converge or diverge.

When parallel rays pass through a convex lens, the convex surface focuses the rays in the direction of the convex center of the lens, forming a real image.A real image is a point where light rays meet and can be observed on the screen or viewing surface on the other side of the lens.

In summary, convex lens changes the direction of light propagation through the shape of convex surface and refraction phenomenon, and has the function of focusing and deflecting. This makes it widely used in optical systems such as photographic lenses, microscopes and telescopes.
