A diffraction grating is an optical element that diffracts energy into its constituent wavelengths.
The slot density, depth and profile of diffraction gratings determine the spectral range, efficiency, resolution and performance of diffraction gratings. There are usually two different types of diffraction gratings - straight gratings and holographic gratings. The marking diffraction grating is generated by a marking engine that uses a diamond-tipped tool to cut grooves in the coating of the grating substrate, usually glass coated with a thin reflective layer.Holographic diffraction gratings are fabricated using interference lithography, which can produce smooth grooved surfaces and eliminate periodic errors in straight gratings.

Transmission gratings are usually coated with anti-reflection coatings.Diffraction gratings can have sinusoidal or blazed profiles.Sinusoidal gratings are generally less efficient than blazed gratings, but their spectral coverage is generally wider.Blazed gratings have a "sawtooth" profile and generally offer higher efficiency.Commercial diffraction gratings are usually replicas produced by secondary primary diffraction gratings, which may be several generations lower than the primary diffraction gratings.Typically, the cost of producing a primary diffraction grating is expensive, and by providing replica gratings (which provide almost indistinguishable performance),one primary diffraction grating can produce thousands of replicas, thereby reducing the unit cost of a diffraction grating.
