Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) and Zinc Sulfide (ZnS)

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) and Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) are two important optical materials widely used in infrared optics, laser systems, and other optical devices. Chemical Properties Zinc Selenide has a chemical formula of ZnSe, while Zinc Sulfide has a chemical formula of ZnS. They are composed of zinc with selenium and zinc with sulfur, respectively.

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) and Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) are two important optical materials widely used in infrared optics, laser systems, and other optical devices.

  1. Chemical Properties

Zinc Selenide has a chemical formula of ZnSe, while Zinc Sulfide has a chemical formula of ZnS. They are composed of zinc with selenium and zinc with sulfur, respectively. Zinc Selenide exhibits good stability at high temperatures, whereas Zinc Sulfide tends to decompose at high temperatures.

  1. Optical Properties

Zinc Selenide has a wider optical bandgap, usually greater than that of Zinc Sulfide, and shows higher transmittance in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. Therefore, Zinc Selenide is commonly used as optical lenses and window materials. In contrast, Zinc Sulfide has poorer optical transparency but still holds value in certain specific applications.

  1. Electrical Characteristics

Zinc Selenide is a semiconductor material with high electron mobility and low resistivity. While Zinc Sulfide is also a semiconductor, its electrical properties are relatively inferior, limiting its applications in certain fields.

  1. Applications

Zinc Selenide is often utilized as the substrate material for mirrors and beam splitters in high-power CO2 laser systems, whereas Zinc Sulfide finds wide application in the production of infrared windows, rectifying shields, and infrared optical components. Zinc Sulfide boasts high hardness, double the fracture strength of Zinc Selenide, and strong resistance to harsh environments.

Zinc Selenide and Zinc Sulfide exhibit significant differences in chemical properties, optical properties, electrical characteristics, and application areas. Zinc Selenide excels in high-temperature stability and optical transparency, while Zinc Sulfide holds advantages in terms of hardness and environmental resistance. Selecting the appropriate material based on specific application requirements can better leverage its performance advantages."
