Corning 7979/7980 fused silica is a high-purity amorphous solid material, which is made by oxidizing the original silica in the process of flame hydrolysis, while fused silica is made by melting natural quartz. Each process produces specific characteristics that are optimized to be used within a given range of ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared parts of the spectrum.
